Meet Our Featured Pet- Sully

Update: Sully has found his forever home! See our Available Pets list for more yorkies!!!

Sully is a chihuahua/yorkie mix. As for his age, we can just tell you that he's a senior citizen. He has no teeth so his tongue is always dangling. He's a little bitty guy at only about 5 pounds. He is actually pretty well potty trained. He'll use potty pads and will also bark to be let outside.

Sully has a laid back personality but won't let the other dogs push him around. He likes to have chewies, even though he can't actually chew them. He enjoys being on the couch with his foster mom but only if invited, otherwise he hangs out in his bed nearby. We would love to see Sully have his own home for the rest of his days. He isn't on any medication and has no health problems that we have discovered. His foster mom says that Sully is very sweet and doesn't cause any trouble in his multi dog home. Sully has a tiny little bark and his foster mom says that it sounds like he's talking to you. He doesn't talk much.

The adoption fee for Sully is $200. Each of our dogs is up to date on all shots, including rabies, spayed or neutered, microchipped, fecal tested for internal parasites, treated if necessary, tested for heartworm, treated if necessary, on heartworm preventative and we also take care of dentals or any other medical needs they may have.

If you are unable to make a monetary donation, we are now collecting used ink cartidges and unwanted cell phones. We will have a receptacle at our adoption events. We receive a small amount for each one that will help our dogs. We are grateful for any and all donations to our organization. Every little bit helps!

Who We Are

In August, 2006, we branched off from a long association with Chihuahua Rescue and Transport in order to have a more local focus. We love CRT and are modeling ourselves after the high standards of that wonderful organization. You may have noticed that we have also branched out from chihuahuas. As we were doing shelter pulls, it became harder and harder to pull chihuahuas for rescue and leave behind other small breed dogs that we knew were highly adoptable. So we started taking them also. Chihuahuas are first in our hearts but we have been very successful in finding wonderful homes for doxies, miniature pinschers and various terriers. If we have the means, the desire and the drive to rescue them as well, how could we not? I guess we should start calling ourselves River City Canine Rescue.

River City Chihuahua Rescue (RCCR) is a non-profit, voluntary organization. We have no paid employees. We are a local, internet-based organization dedicated to the rescue, medical care and adoption of stray and homeless small breed dogs in need. We help control the growing overpopulation by spaying and neutering all dogs in our care. We provide all necessary veterinary treatment and place them in foster homes until they are adopted into forever homes. Whenever possible, RCCR also raises public awareness regarding the abuse and neglect of small breed dogs as well as overpopulation caused by not spaying and neutering.

Adopting a dog from RCCR - The Process

All of our dogs are in fostered in our homes. They are fed premium dog food, temperament tested, altered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, on monthly heartworm preventive, and fecal tested prior to adoption.

RCCR does not adopt out dogs on a first come, first serve basis. Because we want this to be a permanent adoption, we will place the dog in the home best suited for him/her. We can not hold dogs for homes that are not ready to adopt yet or have not yet been approved.

RCCR is 100% spay/neuter prior to adoption. We do NOT make exceptions so please do not ask. If we have puppies available, they will not be available to go to an adoptive home until they are spayed or neutered.

Here's what you need to do...

  • Please access our adoption application at the bottom of this page.

    • We check your personal and vet references that are given on your online adoption application

    • A home visit is scheduled for your family. A home visit involves a rescue volunteer coming to your home and visiting with you. All family members and pets must be present at the time of the visit. If you refuse a home visit, your application will be declined.

    • Your information is submitted to the coordinator, foster home and Board of Directors for a decision. Based upon your application, home visit, and references the Board of Directors will either approve or decline your application for adoption.

    • If you are approved, we will require you to sign an adoption contract and pay an adoption fee. Please see our application for the adoption fee schedule.

    Interested in Volunteering with RCCR?

We would love to have your help! We need volunteers to help foster, transport, conduct home visits, help with fund-raising, contact shelters, and much, much more. Every little bit helps! Please access the volunteer application from Google Docs to tell us about yourself and your interests.
